PRIMOVE technology is based on inductive energy transfer. It is installed entirely under the road surface and under the floor of the vehicles. The charging process begins as soon as the vehicle completely covers the charging segment.

Production of the 40-foot Xcelsior hybrid buses is anticipated to begin in early 2013 and will be manufactured and assembled bumper-to-bumper in New Flyer’s St. Cloud, Minn. manufacturing facility. All buses are expected to be delivered by the end of the summer 2013.

In addition to having the second largest hybrid-electric bus fleet in the U.S., SEPTA achieved a 19.7% reduction in water usage per passenger miles traveled (PMT); a 10.0% reduction in fuel use per PMT; a 4.0% reduction in electricity use per PMT; and 3.6% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions per PMT.

Under this new award, Ballard will supply FCvelocityTM-HD6 power modules for ElDorado fuel-cell hybrid buses featuring a series hybrid-electric drive from lead integrator BAE Systems. These buses are expected to be operational in 2013.

The bus boasts sealed electrically isolated battery modules that cannot produce any gases and a drive train that does not produce any emissions. The new vehicle will be on display at BusCon in Chicago, Sept. 13-14.
