New signs that alert Washington Metropolitan Area Transit
Authority (Metro) riders of prohibited items on its system will be installed at
all Metrorail stations by the end of the month.
The new signs, which have begun to be installed this week,
are customized for each station entrance and address prohibited activities in
the Metrorail system: no smoking; no eating and drinking; no animals (except
service animals); no audio or video devices (without earphones); no littering
or spitting; and no carrying of dangerous or flammable items into the system.
The signs carry the internationally understood symbols of a
red circle with a slash through the prohibited behavior.
The installation of these new signs is part of a continuing
effort to remind Metrorail riders the rules of riding the system. This summer,
Metro installed temporary prohibition signs inside portable sign cases near
Metrorail station kiosks.
