Tucson, Ariz.-based Sun Tran's bargaining unit employees, including drivers, mechanics, and service island attendants, rejected Sun Tran's offer and elected to go on strike Monday.
"The union walked out on what we would consider a very fair offer," said Sun Tran GM Katrina Heineking. "I'm disappointed that we couldn't come to an agreement. This strike will be particularly rough on the riders who depend on us every day for their transportation needs."
Officials and representatives of Teamsters Local 104 negotiated throughout the weekend, since the current contract expired at midnight on July 31.
During the strike, Sun Tran is offering limited service.
Riders are advised to plan accordingly, as buses may be delayed due to overcrowding. As more resources become available, Sun Tran will add more service.
Due to the disruption caused by the strike, Sun Tran passengers will be able to purchase a discounted September monthly or fall quarterly bus pass, pro-rated for the number of days the system experiences a work stoppage.
