Alstom equips Luxembourg with $17M signaling system

Luxembourg Railways (CFL) has selected Alstom Transport to install the third and final portion of its fleet with the Atlas ERTMS signaling solution. The contract is worth more than $16.8 million and covers the installation of 19 locomotives and 22 double-deck electric multiple units (EMUs). CFL’s entire fleet, numbering more than 100 trains, will operate with Alstom’s ERTMS Level 1 solution, for a total amount of more than $38.8 million.

In 2003, CFL ordered an initial design and equipment phase involving 10 prototypes. In 2006, the railway selected Alstom to equip 18 EMUs (batch 1) and, in 2008, 20 locomotives and 20 DOSTO driving trailers (batch 2).

The Atlas equipment will be manufactured at Alstom’s Charleroi and Villeurbanne sites, and installed on the trains by Alstom teams in CFL’s workshops in Luxembourg. The newly equipped trains will be put into service in 2012 on the Luxembourg, French and Belgian networks.
