Sacramento State joins Zipcar, asks students to chip in for transit

Sacramento State will join the greater Sacramento community in bringing the car-sharing network Zipcar to the region.

Zipcar has placed 10 cars at five sites around the city, with Sacramento State placing an additional two Zipcars at the residence halls beginning with the 2011-12 school year.

Participants sign up online and pay an annual fee — $35 for students and $50 for everyone else, plus a $25 application fee. Zipcar vehicles are available 24 hours a day with gas, insurance, parking, maintenance and up to 180 miles of driving per day included in the membership.

The program is part of a systemwide agreement between California State University and Zipcar.

Additionally, Sacramento State's University Transportation and Parking Services wants the Associated Students Inc. to pay off the additional $12,000 in costs related to the school's contract with Sacramento Regional Transit (RT), which provides free transportation to the university's students, according to the State Hornet.

Last year, ASI agreed to pay $71,228 to pay off the RT contract, because the $7.50-per-student fee did not cover the full costs. For the full story, click here.
