Amtrak loses millions on food, beverage service

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Amtrak's food and beverage cars have lost $833.8 million over the last decade, including $84.5 million in 2011, according to testimony at a congressional hearing last week, USA Today reported.

Reasons for the losses include undercharging customers despite higher costs, and theft.

Possible solutions discussed included using café cars instead of dining cars on long-distance routes and replacing the food and beverage service with vending machines or food service carts. For the full story, click here.

    Taking a long distance train without a dining car makes the experience pretty awful. One can't go all that long on an Amtrak nukeburger. The dining car is part of what makes a long train ride so nice. Now I don't know the economics, though the prices I see posted are fairly high, and the menu on trains I've checked only so so. I do know that on some routes Amtrak has improved the menus and made the service more efficient, sometimes by improving the on board facilities. Remove the dining cars and the trains will die.
