N.C. coach co. got U.S. DOT appeal before crash

Feds reversed a decision to shut down Charlotte, N.C.-based Sky Express discount bus service this spring and instead granted the carrier a 10-day reprieve. Three days later, one of the company’s buses overturned, killing four people and injuring dozens.

Maryland MTA denies photography restrictions

Administrator Ralign T. Wells said that MTA officers were not properly representing agency policy earlier this year when they ordered two amateur photographers to stop taking pictures and video of light rail trains. He plans to apologize to the photographers. Meanwhile, the agency faces a possible ACLU lawsuit.

Privatization of Northeast Corridor proposed

Committee Chairman John L. Mica (R-FL) and Rail Subcommittee Chairman Bill Shuster (R-PA) announced at a Congressional hearing that they are preparing legislation to significantly speed up development of high-speed rail and reduce high taxpayer subsidization of the project.
