LaHood: 24 states applied for high-speed rail funds

The states submitted nearly $10 billion in funding requests. The Federal Railroad Administration will begin its official review of the applications. A merit-driven process will be used to award the $2.4 billion to projects that can deliver public and economic benefits quickly.

Amtrak seeks $1.3B in high-speed rail funds

Looking to move forward with several Gateway Project infrastructure improvements, including replacing the more than 100-year-old movable Portal Bridge over the Hackensack River in New Jersey, with a new, high-level fixed bridge; and preliminary engineering and environmental analysis for two new tunnels under the Hudson River into Manhattan with related infrastructure improvements.

California files application for high-speed funds

The federal government recently announced that states can apply for Florida's returned $2.43 billion in high-speed and intercity passenger rail funding. This funding includes $1.63 billion in ARRA funding and $800 million in Fiscal Year 2010 Department of Transportation funding. Applications were due on Monday.

Ohio breaks ground on ARRA-funded multimodal transit center

Portage Area Regional Transportation Authority’s $20 million Central Gateway Multimodal Facility will create an estimated 266 jobs in the construction trades and will serve as the centerpiece of a public-private $80 million investment to revitalize Kent’s downtown area. The economic development effort is expected to create more than 700 new long-term jobs.

CTA moves 5000-series prototypes to Purple Line

The 10 prototype railcars are being tested to determine how they perform when operating in the conditions that CTA's rail fleet is subjected to throughout the year. The prototypes must complete testing before the agency gives approval for the full order to be manufactured.
