Public transit ridership grows in 2008

The American Public Transportation Association (APTA) reported that Americans took 2.6 billion trips on public transportation in the first three months of 2008, almost 85 million more trips than last year for the same time period.

L.A. Metro, S.F. Muni win APTA awards

Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (LA Metro) won the Rail Transit Team Achievement Award at the 16th Annual American Public Transportation Association (APTA) International Rail Rodeo, held in conjunction with the 2008 APTA Rail Conference in San Francisco. Siemens wins Scotland rail order

Siemens, as part of a consortium led by the construction company Bilfinger Berger, has been awarded an order to build an 11.8-mile light rail line in Edinburgh, Scotland, as a turnkey project worth over $1 billion.

Earth Tech wins award

Long Beach, Calif.-based Earth Tech Inc.-- provider of consulting, engineering and construction services -- received the Frances Perkins Vanguard Award for excellence in the utilization of women-owned small businesses as prime contractors and subcontractors.

Transbay taps Pelli Clarke Pelli

The Transbay Joint Powers Authority (TJPA) Board of Directors unanimously approved a professional services agreement with Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects to design the new Transbay Transit Center in downtown San Francisco.

Siemens wins UTA order

Siemens Transportation Systems Inc.(STS) received a notice to proceed from the Utah Transit Authority (UTA) to build and deliver 77 S70 light rail vehicles over a four-year period. This is UTA’s fourth order with STS, bringing its total number of Siemens vehicles to 117.

CATS to add light rail vehicles

The Charlotte, N.C. City Council voted to exercise the final remaining contract option with Siemens Transportation Systems to purchase four additional light rail vehicles for Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS).
