Virginia Commonwealth University will begin charging students for passes to ride the Greater Richmond Transit Co. system, due to increased enrollment. Some students are concerned about the unexpected added cost as well as the new lack of incentive to use public transportation.
The 8.5-mile Lynnwood Link light rail extension is estimated to carry 60,000 to 70,000 riders each weekday through one of the most congested travel corridors in the region. It is scheduled to open in 2023.
The city of Altoona, through the Department of Transportation's Pennsylvania Community Transportation Initiative, was awarded $300,000 to install the path between the Ivyside and downtown campuses for safety purposes and to promote walking and biking as alternative means of transportation.
The Blazer Express will begin service in January 2014. It will operate 24 hours a day during the week. Most points on campus will be no more than a five-minute walk from a stop.

The program is so successful at University of Minnesota - Duluth, that in 2012 the DTA recognized its five millionth U-Pass passenger.
The contract contains a firm order for 85 BRT-styled diesel-electric hybrid 42-foot buses and options of up to 498 42-foot BRT-styled diesel-electric hybrid or CNG buses, and up to 71 (142 EUs) 60-foot diesel-electric hybrid buses over a five-year contract period.
The savings are based on the cost of commuting by public transportation compared to the cost of owning and driving a vehicle, which includes the July 17, 2013 average national gas price $3.65 per gallon, and the national unreserved monthly parking rate.
