Siemens awarded TriMet light rail vehicle contract

Per a $73 million contract, the 18 vehicles will be manufactured from start to finish at Siemens' rail vehicle manufacturing plant in Sacramento, Calif., a facility powered almost entirely by two megawatts of solar energy. The first new rail cars are expected to be delivered in August 2014.

SEPTA to increase fares, defer budget action

Proposed FY 2014 Operating Budget of approximately $1.3 billion, an increase of less than 3% compared to FY 2013. Budget is projected to have a $38 million shortfall. Deferred votes on its operating and capital budgets, due to uncertainties in state funding levels.

NTSB issues Metro North derailment investigation update

The investigative group focusing on the track has learned from inspection reports that in April, maintenance work was done in the area of the derailment of the eastbound train. Records revealed that a joint bar, used to join two sections of rail together, was cracked and that it was repaired by Metro-North personnel.

FTA releases $3.7B more Sandy relief for transit

Will help the four major transit agencies in New York and New Jersey that sustained the greatest damage from Hurricane Sandy. Nearly one-third of the money is set aside to help the agencies begin investing in resiliency projects to help ensure that their transit assets are better able to withstand future disasters, such as major floods.

MV to service Chicago dial-a-ride

The contractor will operate the Village of Schaumburg’s Dial-A-Ride Transportation service beginning June 1, 2013. Will implement new technologies to improve service, including vehicle monitoring system DriveCam and the Trapeze scheduling system.

S.F. MTA to launch new website

The site will be easier to navigate and mobile device-friendly, designed to work on any smartphone or tablet. It will provide home page access to trip planning, service alerts from both 511 and the agency’s Twitter feed, and a “latest news” section.

Expert suggests Capital Metro revamp fare system

Recommendations include some internal, behind-the-scenes changes that would improve the bottom line but not impact riders. Other recommendations would address customer concerns, such as eliminating the complicated zoned-fare structure for MetroRail and providing more equitable discounts for various pass types.
