Improvements to the corridor will reduce travel time between St. Albans, Vt. and New Haven, Conn., by more than one hour. The project involves installing 10 miles of double track, upgrading a signal system on a portion of the line, and making improvements at 28 road crossings.
Under the previous federal law, the state was able to obtain $3 million two years in a row to replace aging public transit buses. MAP-21, however, focuses on rail and fixed guideway systems, which the state does not have.
To meet growing demand for public transit here, authorities plan to add 109 miles of subway track to the city’s underground network by 2015, and expand city bus lanes by 86 miles.
The new chair of APTA is Flora M. Castillo, Board Member of the New Jersey Transit Corporation in Newark, N.J. Castillo is APTA’s first Latina chair.
Honorees include Long Beach Transit's Larry Jackson, HMM's Peter Cipolla, Lane Transit District's Greg Evans, Denver RTD's Lee Kemp and Parsons Brinckerhoff's Cliff Henke.
