The $36.1 million project completely rebuilt the station, with longer, covered platforms and warming shelters on both sides, new lighting, ramps and stairs, new landscaping, and vendor space.
Electric Line riders on all branches will also see minor changes to the existing train schedule to better reflect operating conditions.
Under the current Metra schedule, the station is served by 74 trains each weekday and 33 trains on both Saturday and Sunday.
The project, made possible by Rebuild Illinois funding, will transform a critical hub for paratransit with new assets that promote accessibility, expand capacity, and enhance comfort and aesthetics for people with disabilities and other commuters.
The work includes making all three stations accessible to persons with disabilities.
It’s been a long time coming. Transit agencies are now receiving the necessary funding and here’s a look at their respective journeys to repair age-old infrastructure.
Included is the construction of a new Pace bus facility, including three bus bays, a covered waiting area, and driver relief facilities.
In 2023, Metra is focusing nearly a quarter of its annual capital spending ($119.5 million) on rebuilding and renewing station facilities.
The plan’s vision is “Safe, reliable, accessible public transportation that connects people to opportunity, advances equity and combats climate change.”
The new plan was drafted and finalized with the assistance of Metra customers, employees, board members, regional stakeholders, and others.
