N.Y. town moves to dissolve bus service due to deficit

AMSTERDAM, N.Y. — City officials voted to dissolve Amsterdam's transportation department due to financial woes, reported the Times Union.

The decision came after audit showed a running deficit coming from the department, sometimes reaching over $200,000, while the city as a whole is facing a $5 million deficit. A decline in population and sales tax base were also given as reasons for the move.

Critics said doing away with the city's bus service would impede their ability to go to school and jobs, the Times Union reported.
