Tax hikes proposed to fund Minn. transit

Gov. Mark Dayton's task force on transportation is calling for an increase in local sales taxes, gas taxes and vehicle fees. He created the task force last year in response to more demand for new revenue sources to pay for transit and highways.

Ill. rural transit faces deep cuts

CountyLink, Peoria County’s popular rural transit system, will need to make several service reductions, including cutting four of its six full-time routes. Even with the cuts, the system is expected to run out of money in June.

Mich. Senate approves transit legislation

The five-bill package calls for the creation of a Metro Detroit regional transit authority and would give that authority the power to seek voter approval for a vehicle registration fee or millage to fund a modern public transportation system.

The agency is also taking additional steps to handle the impending winter weather, including making snow plows and salt spreaders ready for service, stocking 16,000 bags of snow-melting supplies, and inspection and maintenance on nearly 2,200 buses.
