Overall ridership on its fixed-route services was up 3.1 percent in April, 8.7 percent in May and 8.3 percent in June from the corresponding months a year earlier. Night Ride service also experienced a 25 percent increase, or 1,022 boardings, from the previous year.

N.Y. MTA to borrow $6.9B, hike fares

Despite debt concerns, the agency is trying to ensure it can finish two tunnel projects. Plans to increase fares by 7.5 percent in 2013 and again in 2015 are also in the latest budget proposal. A final version will be approved in December.

Chicago transit to add 50 police officers

Agency is investing $10 million to hire the officers, which will come from the Chicago Police Academy. The investment is part of the Mayor Emanuel’s ongoing commitment to bring more police officers to every neighborhood of Chicago.

Melaniphy named APTA President/CEO

Michael Melaniphy serves as VP, Public Sector for Motor Coach Industries. Prior to that, he worked at First Group and its predecessor companies, serving as GM for public transit systems in Charlotte, N.C.; Wichita, Kan.; and Hamilton, Ohio.

B.C. University to require transit pass

Beginning in September, a universal bus pass will be mandatory for all full-time Royal Roads University students. A recent Students’ Society referendum vote on buying into the pass received support from 83 percent of students.

FTA makes $15M available for rural tribal transportation

Federal tribal transit grants have enabled dozens of tribal communities and transit providers to purchase, modernize, and expand bus fleets, increase service for seniors and people with disabilities and launch new bus, van and commuter service in rural communities that had never been served by public transit before.
