Profile: Arizona State U. adds to green transit options

To remain as sustainable as possible and make transportation easy and accessible, the University is introducing an “Eco Pass,” allowing students to pay a small fee up front to park on campus and use transit. Several easy-to-use alternative transportation methods are currently available to students, staff and faculty.

Chicago Transit Authority enhancing security

Will double the number of security cameras across the rail system, while also working with police to enhance security for passengers. Chicago police will deploy teams, called Wolfpacks, as well as plainclothes officers to patrol the system.

Senators unveil transportation reauthorization bill framework

The legislation, “Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century, MAP-21,” funds programs at current levels and accommodates for inflation, providing $339.2 billion over six years and averaging $56.5 billion annually. Highlights include eliminating earmarks, consolidating programs, expediting project delivery and expanding the Transportation Innovation and Finance Act program.

Cleveland RTA to renovate BRT station for $10.5M

FTA green lighted work on the University Circle Rapid Transit Station, which was awarded $10.5 million from the TIGER II Program in October 2010. The project will involve reconstructing the station, which includes consolidating the bus and transfer area and the rail station.

Nevada bans texting while driving

The new law, which becomes effective on January 1, 2012, makes it illegal to text or talk on a hand-held cell phone while driving. Violators face a fine of up to $100 for the first offense; up to $200 for the second offense; and up to $250 for the third offense.

Valley Metro to use solar power in cooling system

NRG Thermal LLC is building a system that uses solar power and the company’s downtown district cooling system to provide cooling to the seating areas of the popular 3rd Street/Washington Valley Metro light rail station. Will design and build the system by July 5, the week before the Major League Baseball All-Star game is held in Phoenix.
