Other cash-strapped California transit agencies, facing rising operating costs, are watching the potentially lucrative test run with interest, as current state law restricts digital signage on buses to route and service information.
An examination of the signals systems has revealed no anomalies or malfunctions. The NTSB has possession of the Amtrak engineer’s cell phone. Additionally, under its enforcement authority, the Federal Railroad Administration subpoenaed and obtained the engineer’s cell phone records and has shared that data with NTSB forensic experts.
The order is the latest in a series of actions the FRA has taken in the wake of last week’s derailment of Amtrak Train #188.
Amtrak still would have had work to do, including tuning its radios to the correct frequency, installing them on trains, testing them, and checking for any interference with existing spectrum users, including some Philadelphia-based TV stations.
CBS went to Secaucus Junction, a major rail hub, and the South Orange station armed with a speedometer app and a radar gun to clock trains as they passed through the stations, with a couple of trains traveling in excess of the 60 mph recommended for trains passing through stations.
The state-of-the-art World Trade Center Transportation Hub, when completed in 2015, will serve over 200,000 daily commuters and millions of annual visitors from around the world. At approximately 800,000 square feet, the Hub, which features a wing-like "Oculus” design, will connect visitors to 11 different subway lines, the Port Authority Trans-Hudson (PATH) rail system and Battery Park City Ferry Terminal.

During a second media briefing on the Amtrak train derailment in Philadelphia, NSTB Member Robert Sumwalt discusses findings from the vehicle cameras and the progression of speed leading up to the derailment.
There was no explanation for that acceleration, the NTSB said, but the train’s engineer, Brandon Bostian has agreed to be interviewed by federal investigators, the Post reported.
Aside from a concussion, Brandon Bostian also required 14 staples in his head, as well as several stitches in his leg. He was released from the hospital and interviewed by police Wednesday.
The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating an Amtrak derailment in Philadelphia.NTSB Board Member Robert Sumwalt served as the principal spokesman during the on-scene phase of the investigation.
