BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — According to an Alabama State University's Center for Leadership and Public Policy study, Alabama is currently one of five states that do not provide funds to municipalities for public transportation, the Birmingham Business Journal reported.

The report claims a lack of investment in public transit results in the isolation of people who do not have the means to access private vehicles. Tens of thousands of Alabamians lack access to vehicles, forcing them to depend on friends and family for transportation, or on sparse and underfunded local bus systems.
