LONDON — Transportation officials told The Mirror that because 99% of riders use Oyster fare cards, pre-paid tickets, contactless payment cards or concession tickets instead of currency, bus drivers will no longer accept cash for fare starting this summer.
Cash payments cost £24 million a year — the equivalent of $32.4 million — and removing the option would create “significant” savings, Transport for London’s Leon Daniels told the paper.
