RT acquired the vehicles — originally built by Urban Transportation Development Corp. — from the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority. The vehicles originally went into operation in 1987 and had been in storage since RT acquired them in 2003.
The contract allows for the Washington State DOT to purchase up to 800 heavy-duty buses from all different propulsion types that included 12 different categories for all-electric buses, in which BYD was the leader in 10 of those categories.
The $1.1 billion extension, which is under construction from uptown Charlotte to UNC Charlotte, is expected to open in the summer of 2017.
If all goes as planned, a six-month pilot project would start in January with three stations and inside a tunnel that connects them. All 38 stations would feature cellular connectivity and Wi-Fi access by July 2018.
