The agreement with Norfolk Southern Railway Co., Amtrak and N.C. Railroad Co. is supported by $461 million in ARRA funds, and will include upgrades to tracks and bridges; crossing safety improvements; station expansions in four cities; and construction of a maintenance facility in Charlotte. The funding also will enable North Carolina to improve the speed and reliability of passenger service.

Findings show proximity to existing employment centers and downtown areas to be important factors driving development along transit lines. While transit improvements were a factor, the impetus for development was more strongly related to longer-term efforts to revitalize the center cities.

Ansaldo Honolulu, a joint venture of Ansaldo STS and Ansaldo Breda, will build the rail project's "core systems," while Kiewit Infrastructure West Co.'s contract is for design and construction of the second phase of the rail elevated guideway from Pearl City to Aloha Stadium.
