In the first incident, a man was hit by a NJ TRANSIT train near the Garfield station with 100 passengers onboard, although there were no injuries. Later in the afternoon, the Port Washington Branch on the LIRR was completely suspended in both directions after an unauthorized person was hit by a train at Flushing-Main Street in Queens.
The MBTA suspended rail service Monday night and Tuesday to clear snow from its tracks amid a record-setting period of snowfall in the Boston area. Gov. Charlie Baker and others had criticized the MBTA for its lackluster performance during the extreme snow and cold.

The National Center for Intermodal Transportation surveyed 363 commuter railroad operating employees for a 2011 report and found that 43.6% of them had been involved in at least one critical incident — accidents, near misses, collisions, personal injuries or contact with people or equipment on the tracks. Of those employees, 12.1% reported symptoms consistent with PTSD after the incidents.
