Parker is credited with launching a top-to-bottom transformation of MARTA, the nation’s ninth largest transit agency, at a time when it was still reeling from staggering budget deficits, declining ridership and a poor public image.
Connect Transit’s efforts have resulted in a 40% increase in ridership over the last three years and the honor of being named APTA’s 2015 Outstanding Public Transportation System for agencies providing fewer than four million passenger trips annually.
Houston Metro’s revamped bus network includes additional weekend services, extended weekday hours and improved frequencies on popular routes — all without adding any operational costs. The agency was named APTA’s Outstanding Public Transit System, carrying more than 20 million passengers per year.
METRO asked APTA President/CEO Michael Melaniphy to weigh in on some of these hot-button topics, including positive train control, workforce development and what he thinks of ridesharing services.
As head of Muni, Edward D. Reiskin has the responsibility for more than 5,000 employees, a $1 billion annual operating budget, and a $3 billion capital budget. He rides the system every day, bringing the perspective as a customer to his role as leader of the agency.
METRO spoke with Muni Director of Transportation Edward Reiskin to discuss SFMTA's projects and other key initiatives.
While ridership continues to grow across the industry, many transit agencies are focused on ways to grow millennial usage, including the addition of USB charging stations, Wi-Fi, and real-time bus arrival technologies, as well as targeted advertising and marketing campaigns.
With the addition of Clipper card capabilities, the Cal 1 Card would eliminate the need for students to stand in line each semester for “class passes,” which allow free rides on AC Transit.
The course is instructed by Halsey King, a well renowned speaker and writer on maintenance and technology issues, that includes repair, inspection and management of vehicle fleets.
Last month, the government of Panama announced an agreement to acquire METROBUS. METROBUS operates 1,200 buses and seven bus stations, providing bus service to more than 500,000 daily passengers.
INSIGHT-PRIME and INSIGHT-PRIME+ seats were engineered to be lighter in weight, helping to reduce overall vehicle weights and increase fuel efficiency. The seats also were designed for optimal cleanability and aesthetics.
As CEO of the JTA, Nathaniel P. Ford Sr. leads an agency with an annual budget of $230 million and 850 employees, which provides transportation planning, road and bridge construction and transit services for the Northeast Florida region. Among his most recent accomplishments is the development and implementation of the Blueprint for Transportation Excellence (BTE) strategy that lays the foundation for JTA to become a regional, multimodal transportation leader in Northeast Florida.
No other form of commuting to work has seen the same level of growth as biking has over the past decade. To help public transportation agencies deal with that growth, suppliers have been able to add more bike positions on racks and create furniture and storage solutions at rail stations and transit malls.
With the industry again experiencing growth, operators are taking advantage of the opportunities their regions are presenting, while also dealing with unique challenges and finding ways to grow two very large generational markets.
