House, Senate passes transportation appropriations

The Conference Committee approved the bill by a vote of 38-1. The House passed the bill 298-121, while the Senate approved it with a vote of 70-30. The bill now heads to the President, who is expected to sign it, thereby completing work on the FY 2012 budget for the Department of Transportation.

N.Y. MTA taps real-time information team

MTA Bus Time will enable bus riders to use smart phones, text messaging or their Web browser to learn how far the next bus is from their stop, saving them time and making bus travel easier. Users also can scan QR codes on bus stop signs to learn instantly when the next bus will arrive.

D.C. Metro police adopts new crime-fighting tactics

Team using techniques such as decoy bicycles to further reduce crime in the Metro system. Since the team began their efforts about a month ago, it has made dozens of arrests, stopping would-be bicycle thieves and robbery suspects trying to escape with victims’ electronic devices such as iPhones or cash.

Utah Transit Authority tightens rail safety

The campaign will include banners and signs inside and outside of train cars reminding people to keep their "heads up - don't text around trains;" "listen up - remove headphones around trains;" "stand back - stay behind the yellow line at stations;" and "look twice - another train could be coming from the other direction."

Outgoing APTA President William Millar offered his thanks to the industry and his ringing endorsement to incoming President Michael Melaniphy. The EXPO featured 750-plus exhibitors — 100 first-timers — displaying innovative products and services on the 300,000-square-foot show floor, including two complete railcars and two railcar mockups, and 54 buses and vans.

Smoking ban on N.Y. rail platforms takes effect

Ban on Metro-North and Long Island Railroad station platforms began November 13. Notable New Yorkers including former New York Jet Joe Namath and former New York Yankee Tommy John lent their voices to a public education campaign letting customers know about the rules.
