2023 APTA Honors Recognizes Transit Leaders, Hall of Fame Class

The 2023 American Public Transportation Association (APTA) TRANSform & Expo held its APTA Honors award ceremony on Oct. 10. 

The organization presented awards to agencies for Excellence in Inclusive Collaboration and individuals were recognized in categories such as Outstanding Public Transportation Business Member and Outstanding Public Transportation Board Members.

Inductees of the APTA Hall of Fame also walked the Chapin Theatre stage, as APTA honored members to conclude the ceremony.

The 2023 APTA Honors was held at the Chapin Theatre in the Orange County Convention Center on Oct. 10.

John Bartosiewicz got his start in the industry as an administrative assistant to the transit director in Chapel Hill, North Carolina and now finds himself in the APTA Hall of Fame.

APTA welcomed Paul Ballard into the 2023 Hall of Fame class. His experience includes serving as the general manager or CEO of seven transit agencies since he was 23 years old.

Former Regional Transportation District (RTD) CEO Phillip Washington was inducted into the 2023 APTA Hall of Fame and is now the CEO of Denver International Airport.

Anja Graves’ children Mariana and Jose accept the Outstanding Public Transportation Business Member award for their mother, Anja Graves, who died on Aug. 20.

Brad Miller, CEO, accepted the award for Outstanding Public Transportation System Achievement for an agency providing more than three million and fewer than 15 million annual passenger trips.

Julie Cunningham, former president/CEO of The Conference of Minority Transportation Officials (COMTO) was inducted into the 2023 APTA Hall of Fame and was honored posthumously at the honors ceremony.

Michael Allegra is one of the inductees of the 2023 APTA Hall of Fame. He served as the Utah Transit Authority CEO and has more than 40 years in the rail industry.

Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority’s Paul Smedberg was awarded the Outstanding Public Transportation Board Member award. Smedberg was selected as board chair in 2019.

TriMet, Raimore Construction, and Advanced Tribal, LLC won APTA’s Excellence in Inclusive Collaboration award, as the companies partnered to build the first TriMet FXTM bus line.
