The new $1.4 million, 120,000-square-foot rail service facility on Mare Island, currently offers the capacity to work on 15 railcars. The site, which features a 50-foot maintenance pit, is set up to handle maintenance/wreck repair, renovation/rebuilds, and supply chain management services.

New 66,000-square-foot facility incorporates numerous sustainable features including the use of high-albedo concrete, a highly reflective concrete paving, in the vehicle maintenance yard used to keep the facility's microclimate cooler, as well as 80-kilowatt photovoltaic panels on the roof; an urban runoff system to filter storm water, detain and infiltrate most of the water on site; and reclaimed water for landscape irrigation.

The first laydown in the plant took place in late March and a 90-day period is scheduled to ensure proper plant ramp up. By the end of 2009, the daily production rate will be two vehicles per day, with the first customer deliveries taking place this fall.
