Long Island Rail pilots wireless ticketing

Conductors will use Apple iPhone 4s equipped with a device that enables train crews to make credit and debit-as-credit sales and print out tickets in one transaction. The device will also be used to process onboard cash sales. The pilot is scheduled to run through Oct. 9.

N.Y. MTA to borrow $6.9B, hike fares

Portland's TriMet to fine first-time fare evaders

In response to concerns about whether the agency was collecting all of its fare revenue, TriMet is increasing the number of staff dedicated to fare enforcement. It will also shift from a warning and education focus to issuing citations and exclusions if riders are found without a valid fare. The base fine for not having a valid fare is $175; exclusions from the system can extend up to 90 days.

Agreement reached between LIRR and the Transportation Communications Union modifies some contractual work rules and provides enough savings to avert the planned layoff of 17 ticket clerks in 2011. University of North Texas and other college students would pay $175 for a semester of local service or $250 for a semester of regional service from Denton County Transportation Authority. Faculty and staff would pay $250 for a semester of local service, or $340 for a semester of regional service. Some students and faculty argue that the pricing is too expensive.
