APTA recognizes Clever Devices, Keolis for sustainability practices

The American Public Transportation Association (APTA) recognized two of its member organizations for continued achievements in sustainability. Public transit agencies and businesses voluntarily choose to join the APTA Sustainability Commitment program and pledge to implement processes and actions that create continuous improvements in environmental, social, and economic sustainability. Based on specific measurable achievements, organizations are given Platinum, Gold, Silver, and Bronze Level recognition.

In this round, Gold-level recognition was bestowed upon Keolis Commuter Services LLC in Boston and Bronze-level recognition was awarded to Clever Devices based in Woodbury, N.Y.

GOLD Level – Keolis Commuter Services LLC: Since July 2014, Keolis has operated the MBTA Commuter Rail, which is the fifth-largest commuter rail in the U.S. and moves 127,000 passengers each day. In the fifth year of this partnership, Keolis has continued driving progress responsibly with the implementation of a strategic roadmap further advancing the organization toward sustainable operations and excellence in safety, operations, corporate social responsibility, and other core components of the business. As part of this roadmap, Keolis is promoting greater environmental awareness to its 2,400 Boston-area employees and reducing the operational impact on the environment. They are the first commuter rail provider to achieve Gold-level status outside of Amtrak.

BRONZE Level – Clever Devices: A signatory to the commitment since 2011, Clever Devices has earned Bronze recognition for their sustainability program, particularly in the areas of professional development, employee health and safety, corporate stewardship, and transit technology solutions, which have helped transit agencies to reduce emissions and fuel waste, avoid costly repairs, and retain and increase ridership.

First started in 2009, 155 public transit agencies and businesses have signed on to the APTA Sustainability Commitment. Currently, 38 signatories have received recognition.

"The commitment these organizations are making to sustainability establishes a foundation for future investment in new technologies and practices that will enable for a brighter future for generations to come,” said APTA President/CEO Paul P. Skoutelas. “Their leadership in sustainability and the successful results of their actions serves as an inspiration to other organizations."
