The Kansas City Area Transportation Authority (KCATA) hosted a groundbreaking at the future site of its East Village Transit Center to launch construction of the Prospect MAX BRT line, which was supported by a $29.9 million grant through FTA’s Capital Investment Grants (CIG) Program. FTA’s CIG funding for this project was announced in April 2018.
Similar to other BRT systems, Prospect MAX buses will provide faster service through a 10-mile corridor with traffic signal prioritization and off-board ticketing. The BRT line will include modern features, such as real-time arrival information, Wi-Fi service, and passenger-friendly transit centers, that connect to bus routes serving Missouri and Kansas communities.

Troost MAX, which was partly funded with a $24.5 million CIG award, opened in 2011. The combined BRT lines serve approximately 13,000 riders per day.
FTA’s CIG program supports major transit capital projects nationwide. Under the current Administration, FTA has advanced 13 new CIG projects totaling approximately $3.3 billion in funding commitments. Construction of the Prospect MAX line is scheduled to be completed in October 2019.
The region’s fixed-route system finished out the year with a total of 373.5 million rides. Adding 12.3 million rides over 2024 represents an increase that is equal to the annual transit ridership of Kansas City.
Rolling out in electric yellow and seafoam blue, the first battery-electric buses purchased from GILLIG will begin serving riders in south King County on February 2.
The agreement provides competitive wages and reflects strong labor-management collaboration, positive working relationships, and a shared commitment to building a world-class transit system for the community, said RTA CEO Lona Edwards Hankins.
The priorities are outlined in the 2026 Board and CEO Initiatives and Action Plan, which serves as a roadmap to guide the agency’s work throughout the year and ensure continued progress and accountability on voter-approved transportation investments and essential mobility services.
