Operations or Projects: Which is more important?

On Wednesday, the U.S. House passed a $154 billion jobs bill, or what’s being called a second stimulus package, by a vote of 217 to 212. The package is not expected to be taken up by the Senate until early next year, but if it goes through, public transportation will likely have another pool of funds to draw from, since the current bill enables large transit systems to use 10 percent of the $6.15 billion in formula funding for operations. It also includes $800 million for Amtrak.

Amtrak adds capacity, breaks Thanksgiving record

Comparing Thanksgiving 2009 to Thanksgiving 2008, there was a 5.5 percent increase in ridership on the Northeast Corridor, a 2.9 percent increase on state-supported trains and other short distance corridors, and a 4.7 percent increase on long-distance trains.

NCTD'S SPRINTER wins 'Project of the Year'

Service began in March 2008 on a 22-mile route between Oceanside and Escondido and currently carries more than 8,000 passengers each day, serving the most densely populated and transit-friendly corridor in North San Diego County. It links to various BREEZE bus routes along that corridor as well as to the COASTER, Amtrak and Metrolink rail services out of Oceanside.

Subsidyscope calculated profits and losses per passenger to determine which routes cost Amtrak the most to operate. Its analysis was based on a 2005 GAO critique of Amtrak's accounting methods, which says the railroad should consider depreciation when calculating profitability.
