Rail projects top $83 billion in U.S., Canada

Despite the quick decline of high-speed rail projects and a $4 billion dip compared to 2010, this year's Top Rail Projects survey features four new projects, including Honolulu's $5.3 billion light rail project. The Toronto Transit Commission again tops this year's list, with Canadian projects, overall, putting together a strong showing.

Toronto Transit adds route filtering to e-alerts

Riders using the e-alert service can now select specific subway lines or surface routes to add to their online profile and receive system delay notices for those routes only. Soon, riders also will be able to receive an e-newsletter with information about upcoming service changes and events.

Report: Light rail best for Toronto

According to the report, "Clearing the Air on the TTC," subways rate slightly better than light rail in terms of fewer greenhouse gas emissions, however, light rail vehicles, travelling on dedicated lanes, would outstrip that benefit by taking many more cars off the road because the city could afford to build more light rail.
