The New Orleans Regional Transit Authority (RTA) has started construction on the Algiers Ferry Terminal Renovation Project, a major upgrade to one of the region’s key multimodal transit hubs.
Built in the late 1970s, the terminal has continued to serve riders as ferry vessels and operations have changed. With dedicated federal funding in place, RTA is moving ahead with a full modernization to improve accessibility, rider amenities, and terminal operations.
“The Algiers project is another step in RTA’s investment in modern transit infrastructure and regional connectivity,” said Lona Edwards Hankins, CEO of the New Orleans Regional Transit Authority.
The renovation of the Algiers Ferry Terminal and maintenance building represents an $11.4 million investment, supported by:
Federal Transit Administration funding
Federal Highway Administration ferry funds flexed to FTA
Local match provided by RTA
Planned improvements include:
Redesigned accessible boarding ramp
Upgrades to the pedestrian bridge
Full interior renovation and a new second-floor office level
First-floor space reconfigured for future community and passenger uses
New rider shelters, lighting, and landscaping
Stormwater enhancements
Revised site circulation to better support walking, biking, accessibility, and transit access
The construction contract was awarded to CDW Services. Batture Engineering LLC served as the engineering firm for design, and Studio West served as the architectural firm.
“This renovation will bring needed upgrades to a terminal that has served Algiers for decades,” said RTA Board Chair Fred Neal Jr. “It will enhance mobility and the rider experience while strengthening regional connections.”
Construction is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2027.
The agency is testing floor decals on select railcars to improve awareness of priority seating and support a more accessible transit experience.
