In about two years, passengers will be able to travel the 19 miles from Shanghai, China, to the city’s airport in 10 minutes on high-speed rail. German rail consortium Transrapid (a partnership between the German government, Siemens and Thyssen Krupp) will build the maglev train, which can run at speeds of more than 270 mph. North and South Korea agreed to reconnect a railway across their border and clear land mines along an old railroad near the border. The rail line should be reconnected by the fall. If reconnected, the railway will become the first direct land transport link between the two Koreas since their 1950 to 1953 war. It will connect the Korean capitals of Seoul and Pyongyang and continue to Shinuiju, a major city on the North’s border with China.
