The Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) launched a free, first-ever Wi-Fi pilot program on 10 buses, according to the company’s press release.

The program could be expanded to more buses and Trolleys if it proves to be successful.

“We live in a digital age where being able to access the internet is an important part of our day-to-day activities. Whether we are using the internet for work or school, having internet access is crucial to ensure a person’s success”, said Nathan Fletcher, MTS board chair, and chair, San Diego County Board of Supervisors.  “This pilot program aims to help bridge the technology gap. If successful, we will be studying ways to expand it across the region.”

Riders can find buses with the Wi-Fi program through a dedicated bus finder map or go to the MTS official website to see the routes that have Wi-Fi on that day. The final way to find a Wi-Fi enabled bus is to look for signs nearing the boarding areas.

Users will have to be on board to access the internet on one of the 10 buses. They will have to enable Wi-Fi connection of their personal device, too. Riders can browse the internet and stream music/video for free on any connected device.

MTS’ staff will check the Wi-Fi’s performance throughout the pilot program by collecting customer feedback. Users can complete this survey to tell MTS about their experience.

MTS operates 95 bus routes and three Trolley lines across 10 cities and area of San Diego County. The company requires riders to wear face coverings at all time, and practice physical distancing.
