DETROIT — The Detroit News reported that the city’s new Transit Police force started to ride the Detroit Department of Transportation’s buses on its most troubled routes on Monday, following a growing number of attacks on drivers and between passengers.
The city is working to hire at least 30 more officers to supplement the unit now responsible for patrolling the buses and People Mover. Union and city officials told the newspaper that they hope to have the unit fully established by summer.
The centralized transit police force is one of the safety initiatives being implemented by Mayor Mike Duggan’s administration to improve Detroit bus safety and service.
Additionally, 50 buses have been hardwired with eight internal and external surveillance cameras apiece since February and an additional 250 buses are expected to be outfitted with the equipment by October. For the full story, click here.
