APTA : Buses, trains leading clean tech advances

Today’s public transit vehicles are significantly more advanced than automobiles in their ability to run on clean fuels. For instance, buses on the road powered by alternative fuels rose from 2% in 1992 to 36% in 2011. That compares to the percentage of cars capable of being powered by alternative fuels was only 3.2% in 2011.

Chicago transit expands service to cut travel times

Beginning in mid-December 2012, the Crowding Reduction Plan will add service to 48 bus routes, including the busiest and most crowded bus routes in the city, during peak times. It will also add 17 rail trips to the various lines during weekday rush periods.

The bus unit’s operating income was 4.6% of sales in 2011, compared with trucks’ 9.1%, construction equipment’s 10.2% and boat engine maker Penta’s 8.8%. The bus unit continued to trail the other divisions in the quarter ended June, when it posted a 3.4% operating margin.
