NJ TRANSIT Assuming Bus Service in Bayonne on ‘Abandoned’ Route

The accommodation of service in Bayonne is the latest NJ TRANSIT rescue plan for abandoned routes since 2023.

Since 2023, NJ TRANSIT has stepped in to operate 42 bus routes previously operated and abandoned by multiple private carriers.

NJ TRANSIT will assume operation of a bus route in Bayonne on Dec. 1, previously operated by Broadway Bus Company, to ensure uninterrupted service for customers. This new service is the latest in a string of private carrier service abandonments over the past three years.

“I am extremely proud of the work our bus operations team has done to maximize existing resources to accommodate service on routes abandoned by private carriers,” said NJ TRANSIT President and CEO Kris Kolluri. “It is another example of NJ TRANSIT’s stewardship and commitment to meeting the needs of our customers.”

Beginning Dec. 1, the No. 12 Broadway Route will accommodate former customers of Broadway Bus Company. While the route will not continue all the same stops as the previous carrier, it will be structured to provide more efficient coverage with better connections.

NJ TRANSIT Continues Adopting Abandoned Routes

Since 2023, NJ TRANSIT has stepped in to operate 42 bus routes previously operated and abandoned by multiple private carriers. In several cases, NJ TRANSIT’s success in assuming these routes has led to growth and the need to add service to accommodate it.

The contracted carrier service abandonments and contract terminations accommodated by NJ TRANSIT over the past three years include:

  • DeCamp Bus Lines abandoned seven routes in 2023. NJ TRANSIT accommodated ridership on existing routes by modifying schedules. As ridership increased, NJ TRANSIT created four additional routes.

  • Transdev Services ceased to operate seven bus lines in Monmouth County in 2023. NJ TRANSIT leased the carrier’s facility and began operating service.

  • O.N.E. Bus, a Coach USA Company, ceased to operate three routes in 2023. NJ TRANSIT assumed operation of the routes upon their abandonment. Due to the short notice, NJ TRANSIT temporarily contracted with another carrier until it could acquire and train drivers to support the operation.

  • A & C Bus ceased operating five routes that intersected with other existing NJ TRANSIT routes in the Jersey City area. NJ TRANSIT accommodated the routes and created additional routes.

  • O.N.E. Bus, a Coach USA Company – Hudson County Local Bus Service, ceased to operate three routes in 2024. NJ TRANSIT accommodated these Hudson County routes.

  • Additionally, on June 11, 2024, Coach USA filed a Chapter 11 bankruptcy petition. On July 3rd, 2024, Coach USA verbally informed NJ TRANSIT of its intention to abandon its contracts in Bergen and Passaic Counties, encompassing 17 routes. NJ TRANSIT assumed the routes and contracted the Bergen and Passaic services to another operator.
