Chatham Area Transit (CAT) announced a partnership with the City of Savannah, which reinforces its commitment to the safety of its riders and staff.
CAT added that it calls upon its passengers to join in this collective mission of vigilance and support: "If you see something, say something."
"Public transportation is an urgent need in our community, and the safety of our operators and passengers is of our utmost priority," said Mayor Van R. Johnson. "The City of Savannah will not tolerate indecent or criminal acts committed against either, and we will work with Chatham Area Transit in prosecuting perpetrators to the highest extent of the law."
The agency recently announced Via as the TransitTech software and operations provider for its new low-emission microtransit pilot program launching in Albemarle County.
The service, tentatively called “MicroCAT,” will provide app-based, on-demand rides by using technology to expand access to sustainable transportation.
The service will function as an extension of CAT’s existing fixed-route bus lines and will provide coverage in Pantops and along Route 29 North.
CAT also announced that its Board of Directors approved the agency’s Master Transit Plan during CAT’s Regular Board Meeting on July 25.
The plan outlined a newer vision for CAT as changing mobility needs across Chatham County evolve.
The initiative, in partnership with Chatham Connects, details CAT’s strategic goals to develop regional mobility strategies, including considering new ways to offer public transportation.
The 12-month initiative focuses on staff engagement, training, and reducing preventable incidents.
