Cleveland to redesign rapid station
The consumer-friendly design of the station will feature bicycle racks combined with a bicycle park that will include rental, repair, bike lockers and showers for bike commuters.
The Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (GCRTA), Project for Public Spaces and Cleveland-based studioTECHNE Architects will collaborate on the redesign of GCRTA’s East 120th Street Rapid Station.
The consumer-friendly design of the station will feature bicycle racks combined with a bicycle park that will include rental, repair, bike lockers and showers for bike commuters and a parking deck, which will be connected to the station and serve as an intermodal hub, where university and neighborhood shuttles will interact with bus and rail passengers. Also, a group that provides car sharing will provide vehicles at the parking facility for rent by the hour.
Other design features employed to provide a holistic solution to solving traffic, pedestrian and congestion issues in the area include:
• A comprehensive streetscape plan to improve circulation; convert vehicle-oriented streets to pedestrian-oriented streets through improved street crossings, pavement textures, countdown signals and street trees.
• Development of an integral public art program that establishes an overall identity for the area, reflects the culture and history of the community and provides a link to the surrounding destinations.
• Inclusion of Sustainability and Green Building into all phases of the project, collection and management of rainwater, selection of native species of plants, generation of power through wind and solar, and the construction of a LEED Silver Building.
• Introduction of an open glass façade allowing for safety of travelers as well as views of the cafés and small shops contained within.
GCRTA and its partners did not announce when the new station will be open.
