Falcon Electric Inc., an on-line UPS and backup power form mission-critical applications deployed in harsh environments, announced that more than a dozen of its SSG Series uninterruptible power supply (UPS) units have been protecting the Intelligent Traffic System of the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge since August 2013 against power outages.

The double-decker suspension bridge serves as a vital connection between Staten Island and Brooklyn, N.Y., with at least 195,000 vehicles crossing it daily. With such heavy traffic — especially during rush-hour commuting — highway signs and traffic monitoring and control equipment must operate optimally at all times. Fortunately, Falcon Electric’s SSG Series Industrial UPSs work seamlessly 24/7, ensuring efficient travel to and from destinations.

Intelligent Traffic Systems are made up of mission-critical electronic systems including computers, vehicle location sensors, toll equipment, cameras, monitoring and control equipment operating 24x7 in oftentimes harsh environmental conditions. If any of these systems lose power, real-time traffic information can be compromised, leading to dangerous safety issues.

Falcon’s SSG Industrial UPSs operate from -20°C to 55°C (-4°F to 131°F) and the SSG-RP High Temperature UPS operates from -30°C to 65°C (-22°F to 149°F). Moreover, this dual-conversion on-line or “true” UPS meets UL 1778 and UL 508, as well as multiple agency (UL, cUL and CE) listings for wide-temperature operation.

The SSG family is available in “ready-to-deploy” NEMA-rated enclosures. The unique capability of the UPSs to operate in a wide temperature range eliminates the need for installing air conditioning or heating inside the enclosure — saving time, money and additional points of failure. For further peace-of-mind, users can add hours of battery runtime with additional external battery packs including Falcon’s award-winning wide-temperature 40Amp-hour battery pack.
