State auditors report that the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) is not adequately tracking its bus drivers to prevent violations of state and federal regulations. The 45-page report, which was released last week, contends that the MTA does not adequately track drivers' hours to identify violations of on-duty hour restrictions. Nor does the MTA adequately track drivers who are moonlighting at other jobs, the report said. The report also suggested that the MTA is not passing along key information about drivers' traffic citations to bus division managers. In response, MTA officials agreed that record-keeping and management could be improved, but offered statistics that showed its drivers had fewer collisions per 100,000 miles than drivers in New York, Chicago and Philadelphia.
