BOSTON — Transit officials from New York City and other metropolitan areas are offering advice to the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) on how it might avoid the problems that crippled the Boston-area during winter's record-setting snowfall, including the use of outside contractors to help clear snow after storms, the Associated Press reported.
Frank DePaola, interim GM of the MBTA, told an oversight hearing of the Legislature's Transportation Committee that the MBTA received a number of tips including using special diesel-powered vehicles to clear snow from tracks, rather than "snow trains," as well as using deicing chemicals to prevent the third rail from freezing and losing contact with the trains, the AP reported.
The region’s fixed-route system finished out the year with a total of 373.5 million rides. Adding 12.3 million rides over 2024 represents an increase that is equal to the annual transit ridership of Kansas City.
