N.C. officials face conflict over transit funds
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Opponents of the half-cent sales tax that funds bus and light-rail systems in Mecklenburg County, N.C., have mounted a petition drive to get a referendum on the November ballot. However, a majority of Mecklenburg County commissioners oppose repealing the tax, and transit officials warn that lack of funds could force service cuts, fare increases and prevent development of additional lines.
