Court rules B.C. Transit, TransLink rules violate Charter
VANCOUVER — The British Columbia Court of Appeal has ruled that the refusal by B.C. Transit and TranLink to carry political advertising on its vehicles violates Canada’s Charter of Rights. The decision overturns a 2004 ruling that the agencies did not violate the charter when they refused to run ads by teacher and student groups. For the full story, click here. NEW YORK — The New York Police Department (NYPD) has deployed its first K-9 unit devoted exclusively to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s subway system. Eventually 27 German shepherds will be specially trained to work the subway, giving the NYPD the largest K-9 team in the U.S. For the full story click here. BOSTON — Massachusetts officials and the Conservation Law Foundation have settled a lawsuit over a series of transit projects the commonwealth had pledged to build to offset pollution caused by the Big Dig.
