N.Y. MTA unveils plan to boost police presence on rail
New strategy will deploy patrol teams randomly to avoid predictable patterns.
The New York MTA unveiled a new commuter rail security initiative Wednesday that would redeploy MTA police and use federal, state and local law enforcement to help patrol trains and platforms. MTA officials stressed a new focus on police visibility from the Manhatten rail hubs to the ends of each Metro-North, Long Island Rail Road and Staten Island Railway line. The new strategy will deploy patrol teams randomly to avoid predictable patterns. Other security initiatives include:
Step-on inspections of trains and deployment of 50 explosive-trained K-9 teams by MTA officers.
Teams of Transportation Security Administration marshals being deployed onto MTA commuter trains.
The New York State Police performing inspections in its commuter rail territories.
County and municipal police departments throughout the Metro-North, Long Island Rail Road and Staten Island Railway territory increasing patrols at stations, on platforms and in parking lots.
The New York Police Department augmenting the directed patrol with teams of officers in Queens and the Bronx.
