Nation's first hydrogen fuel cell bus shown at expo

Federal Transit Administrator Jennifer Dorn on Thursday rode in the nation's first hydrogen fuel cell bus during the Third Annual Fuel Cell Expo. Hydrogen technology is one of the ways in which Transportation Secretary Norm Mineta and the Federal Transit Administration are supporting President Bush's FreedomCAR and Hydrogen Fuel Initiatives. Prior to boarding the bus, Dorn announced $1.5 million in funding for the continuation of a public-private partnership with the Northeast Advanced Vehicle Consortium and United Technology Corporation Fuel Cells to develop and deploy a commercially-viable hydrogen-fueled, ambient pressure PEM fuel cell engine for buses. In addition to the 30-foot ThunderPower hydrogen fuel cell bus, several other vehicles were on display at the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT): a 40-foot phosphoric acid fuel cell bus, a battery electric bus, a hybrid electric bus and prototype hydrogen fuel cell cars available for ride and drive.
