SamTrans announced that its Board of Directors approved the first biennial budget cycle in the transit agency’s four decades of operation.

The budgets are for fiscal years (FY) 2024 and 2025 and cover both operating and capital expenses.

This is how they’re broken down:

Operating Expenses 

  • FY 2024: $264.5 million

  • FY 2025: $273.3 million 

Capital Expenses 

  • FY 2024: $187.9 million 

  • FY 2025: $67.1 million

“These budgets reflect the board’s commitment to providing safe, reliable, and affordable transit service to our community,” said Josh Powell, SamTrans Board chair. “This wouldn’t be possible without the support of SamTrans riders, employees, and our elected officials.” 

Funding for Key Initiatives

The budgets include funding for key initiatives, including:

  • Expanding mobility with new Ride Plus microtransit service in Half Moon Bay and East Palo Alto/Belle Haven neighborhood of Menlo Park. 

  • Pushing toward a zero-emission fleet with new battery electric and hydrogen fuel-cell electric buses, plus charging and fueling infrastructure. 

  • Implementing Reimagine SamTrans, providing better bus service with more direct routes to improve connectivity and frequency. 

“We now have a two-year fiscal window to focus on increasing access and mobility, reducing congestion, and promoting economic vitality in San Mateo County,” said SamTrans CEO April Chan. “Passage of these budgets ensures SamTrans can continue its mission of providing high-quality, safe, and reliable transit services, enhancing the quality of life for all residents.” 

In addition, the agency has budget authority to focus on key goals, including employee retention, maintaining a diverse workforce, and strategic planning.
