An investigation conducted by the news outlet showed that although VIA buses and their ramps meet Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards, many of the area bus stops are not built to accommodate a bus ramp, which causes riders to navigate steep climbs.
The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is responsible for the land under at least a dozen of these stops. The Federal Highway Administration sent a demand letter in 2010 to TxDOT, requesting that the agency form a plan to make the stops ADA-compliant. TxDOT told KENS 5 all of the stops along Highway 281 are scheduled to be retro-fitted at a cost of $211,000. For the full story, click here.
