The city of Burlingame is also contributing $200,000 toward this phase of the project.
These three major milestones bring the Caltrain Electrification Project closer to passenger service in fall 2024.
On July 1, 2025, the base fare will increase from $3.75 to $4.00 for adults and $1.75 to $2.00 for Eligible Discount riders.
The milestone signifies major progress in expanding Caltrain’s ability to test and run electric trains along the corridor.
Initial tests will be conducted between Santa Clara and College Park Stations on the Santa Clara Drill Track. Test runs will expand to the main track, between San Antonio and San Jose Diridon stations this summer.
The cost of the first phase, referred to as pre-construction services, is $1.49 million. The project is funded by the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority Measure B Program and the City of Mountain View.
Michelle Bouchard has worked for Caltrain for more than 20 years and has been the acting executive director since April 2021.
The new train cars will serve as the centerpiece of the Caltrain Electrification Project.
Electrification will reduce Caltrain’s greenhouse gas emissions and eliminate the particulate matter caused by the aging diesel engines.
The trains will go into service in 2024, and until then, will be tested to ensure they and the infrastructure they will rely upon are in good working order.
